Mercruiser Engine Service Calgary
Mercruiser engines are built to last and designed to require very little replacement of core or internal parts. That said, Dandy Marine follows a specific service regimen when servicing Mercruiser engines. It looks something like this:

Change the engine oil and filter. For engines that experience frequent idle-run-use, the engine coupler should be lubricated every 50 hours. Also at 100 hours, drain and change the sterndrive gear lube, grease all zerks, inspect the fuel filters, check and adjust engine alignment, and inspect all anodes, belts, and spark plugs.
Every 100 Hours or Annually:
Pull the sterndrive to inspect U-joints, splines, and bellows fully. Replace the pump impeller.
Every 200 Hours or Three Years:
Inspect all cooling and exhaust hoses and clamps for leaks and other issues. Inspect the water shutters (also called flapper valves) for wear. Also, check and torque the engine mounts and electrical system.
Every 300 Hours or Three Years:
Drain and replace the engine coolant/antifreeze. Replace the U-joint and exhaust bellows.
After every use, it is also recommended to connect a flusher and run fresh water through the Mercruiser engine until it is thoroughly flushed.
Every Five Years:
What to Watch Out for with Mercruiser Engines:
The “Big Three”
Mercruiser engines are extremely reliable, but when issues do crop up, owners typically encounter three problems.
They are:

Improper Winterization
(See the sections below for more information on proper winterization and storage).

Exhaust Manifold and Risers
Every three to seven years, the exhaust manifold and risers must be replaced. These components are essential to engine cooling by mixing exhaust and cooling water. They corrode over time, and if not replaced, they can lead to catastrophic internal rust in the engine’s cylinders.

Transom Bellows
These rubber components house the universal joints that prevent water from entering the boat. Once they dry out, crack, and wear over time, they can take on water, compromising the integrity of the vessel.
In addition to the “Big Three” listed above, other aspects of Mercruiser engines that require maintenance and care include the ignition coil, fuel delivery system, water pump impeller, sea pump, and shift cables. Dandy Marine can work on, improve, and replace all of these systems.
Solving the “My Mercruiser Boat Won’t Start” Problem
Boat engines are designed to require less maintenance and fewer parts replacements than vehicle engines. Boats do not have tires, wheels, brakes, or expensive internal parts that require replacement after a certain mileage. However, boat engines do have one issue that requires significant attention: storage and winterization.
When customers call Dandy Marine and say, “My boat won’t start,” the first question is always, “How do you store your boat?” How a boat owner winterizes and stores their boat can make all the difference in whether it starts up next spring.
Mercruiser Winterization & Storage

Mercruiser boat engines are extremely reliable and are therefore very desirable. However, like any marine engine, they are susceptible to damage when not properly cared for, especially if not winterized correctly.
The best marine engines are the ones people are most motivated to take extremely good care of. Great marine engines are expensive, high-performance machines that will run for years if well cared for. Therefore, it is financially sensible to perform the seasonal service needed to extend their lifespan, as frequent, scheduled service saves money in the long run by avoiding costly repairs and time-consuming replacement of original parts.
Some of the best Mercruiser winterization tips are as follows:
1.
Stabilize the fuel. Add a marine fuel stabilizer, such as Mercury Quickstor, to the gas tank.
2.
Run the motor to ensure the stabilizer moves through the engine.
3.
Change the engine oil and filter while the engine is warm.
4.
Fog the cylinders with fogging oil, sprayed directly down the carburetor or throttle body until the engine stalls.
5.
Drain the cooling system and then flush/fill the engine with antifreeze.
6.
Change the gear lube and always inspect for milky fluid and metal shavings.
7.
Check for fishing line at the prop shaft and remove it if present.
8.
Remove the battery and store it in a temperature-controlled environment.
