Providing service out of Airdrie, AB (10 minutes north of Calgary), thousands of southern Alberta boat owners have gotten their best-in-class Indmar boat engines serviced and maintained through Dandy Marine.
In fact, Dandy Marine is the only Calgary and Airdrie boat service shop that has:
1) Been in business for over 35 years.
2) Garnered over 100 years of combined experience among the team of excellence-in-their-own-class marine technicians.
3) Serviced all regional boat engine makes and models with a focus on Volvo Penta, Mercruiser, and Indmar.[1]
As a factory-trained and dealer-certified Indmar maintenance and service specialist, this page focuses on how Dandy Marine maintains and preserves the integrity and reliability of high-performance Indmar tow engines.
The Basics of Indmar Engine Service
Indmar is a different beast in every sense of the word. It is the world’s largest privately held manufacturer of gasoline-powered inboard marine engines, with a niche focus on highly specialized, heavy-duty engines specifically designed for towboats (wakeboarding, wakesurfing, and water skiing).
As one can imagine, the service and maintenance for engines that are put under a lot of high-torque stress, like Indmar, couldn’t be more important. Some of the aspects that make Indmar engine service different from other boat engines include the following:

Most boat engines can go about 100 hours of runtime between oil changes. Not Indmar. Indmar engines require an engine oil and filter change every 50 hours.
Oil and Filter Changes:
Indmar engines must have the raw water pump impeller changed once per year, as a failed pump impeller can cause the engine to overheat and potentially fail out in the middle of the lake, necessitating rescue or a long, unplanned swim back to the dock.
Raw Water Impeller Service:
Because Indmar engines are under so much strain, parts that are meant to wear out over time (like filters, belts, and hoses) must be replaced on a specific schedule. Dandy Marine knows what these schedules are and how they differ, one Indmar engine to the next.
Fuel Filters, Belts, and Hoses:
Like the engine oil and filter, the other fluids used in Indmar engines require scheduled replacement (think transmission fluid and V-drive fluid). These fluids typically need to be replaced every 100 hours.
The above is just a very brief overview of common service items on the Indmar service checklist. There is also a comprehensive inspection and preventive maintenance schedule for each Indmar engine model. Consult with Dandy Marine to determine what your Indmar engine needs and when.

“Indmar-isms,” What to Watch Out for On Indmar Engines

Indmar engines are some of the best-produced engines in the history of marine mechanics. They are used primarily on tow boats, which puts them under significant strain to allow wakeboarding, wakesurfing, kneeboarding, and water skiing. These are some of the best-ever manufactured engines, but they do have “Indmar-isms” which Calgary boat mechanics at Dandy Marine are trained to diagnose and treat, like:
Impeller Replacement Requirements.
Indmar engines require seasonal impeller inspection. Indmar’s crank-driven raw water pump is highly reliable. However, the impellers still require frequent inspection and regular replacement, especially when the vessel is operated in shallow, sandy, or silty water.
Exhaust Sensors
Indmar revolutionized exhaust and emissions by pioneering the use of catalytic converters (ETX/CAT) in marine engines. These are incredibly efficient and effective, but they do require post-catalyst temperature sensors to protect the engine, which must be inspected and occasionally replaced.
Electrical Systems
Quoting Indmar, “Over the years, specific Indmar 450 and 575 models (notably in 2019) were subject to service bulletins and recalls regarding 230-amp alternator voltage regulator failures. Proper battery maintenance and clean electrical connections are vital to avoid burning out these high-output marine alternators.”
The Importance of Effective Indmar Winterization and Storage
Indmar engines require similar winterization and storage as other boat engines. Like most engines, one must drain all water from the engine to prevent the block from cracking. One must add marine antifreeze to the cooling system, stabilize the fuel, and fog the cylinders.
What most people don’t know is that there are steps to winterizing Indmar engines that aren’t involved with other boat engines, and these steps are immensely important. They include:

Indmar winterization
Indmar winterization centers around the Single-Point Drain System. Located near the transmission or oil filter, pulling this single knob drains the entire engine block.
Requires an additional step
However, the single-drain system requires an additional step that most boat owners might not be familiar with. Indmar requires owners to probe or “poke” the drain holes with a small wire device (such as a paperclip or heavy-gauge copper wire) after all the water has drained. Silt and sand often build up inside the block ports and physically block water from completely draining, which can lead to cracked blocks due to freezing temperatures during winter.
Closed-System Cooling
Indmar engines often use closed-system cooling mechanisms, meaning the antifreeze (coolant) does not need to be drained every season. However, it is still recommended that Indmar cooling systems be completely flushed and refilled every 3-5 years.
Exhaust Manifolds
The Indmar exhaust manifolds are designed with specific systems that require special attention. During winterization, pull the specific blue plugs on the exhaust manifolds and V-drive/transmission coolers to prevent trapped water from pooling and freezing in low points, which could cause catastrophic damage to the vessel.
Heater Winterization
Heater winterization is crucial for towboats that use Indmar engines! Because Indmar engines are the standard in many inboard wake/surf boats (like Malibu, Axis, Supra, and Moomba), they are often equipped with aftermarket or factory passenger heaters, which require attention during winterization. People often forget the winterization schedule for boat accessories, but neglecting them during winterization can lead to expensive repairs come spring. On Indmar boats with passenger heaters, the heater core retains significant water and is notorious for freezing and bursting. You must disconnect the heater hoses and blow compressed air (low pressure) through them to push all the water out. This step is not required on standard outboard motors and sterndrives.
To fog? Or not to fog?
To fog? Or not to fog? Not all Indmar engines require engine fogging! In fact, most of the newer models require owners to run the engine after adding fuel stabilizer to a full tank of premium gasoline. Check with Dandy Marine to determine whether your Indmar engine needs to be fogged during winterization.
