1) Address the fuel system. Start by stabilizing the fuel with a high-quality marine fuel stabilizer added to the gas tank. For ethanol fuel, top off the gas tank to 95%. Run the engine for 10 to 15 minutes.

2) Move to the engine oil and gear lube. Change the engine oil by warming up the engine during the previous step. Change the oil and filter. Then check the lower unit gear lube. Remove the drain plug, drain the fluid, and check it for milkiness or metal shavings. If neither is present, refill with fresh, manufacturer-recommended lubricant. If either milkiness or metal shavings are present, contact a certified marine mechanic in Calgary. 

3) Now address the engine cooling system. Run the engine with fresh water, then fog it with a fogging oil to produce a rust-resistant coating on the cylinder walls, valves, and pistons. Do this via the air intake until the engine stalls. Now, drain all the raw water from the engine block and manifolds, and run non-toxic pink marine antifreeze through the cooling system. Always pull the hull drain plug to allow any bilge water to escape before it freezes.

4) If the boat has a freshwater tank, water heater, or marine head… If any of those factors are applicable, pump drinking-water-safe marine antifreeze through all the lines, running every faucet and shower until pink antifreeze comes out.
